Gitkin, Funk Hybridization from New York’s Melting Pot

Gitkin – De La Canción

Gitkin – De La Canción (Wonderwheel Recordings, 2020)

De La Canción is a 4-track EP from Gitkin, one of the projects led by Brian J (Brian Jay). On De La Canción, Gitkin masterfully combines funk with various world music influences. The album begins with “De La,” a song where Gitkin combines scorching Tuareg desert blues guitar, Latin percussion and Spanish language vocals by Dominican-American singer Carol C., founder of New York soul band Si*Sé.

The second song is “Canción De Aplauso,” where Gitkin brings together irresistible Colombian-style cumbia, Nigerian Afrobeat, Cuban tumbao, and a Middle Eastern melody.

The other 2 songs are Pimps of Joytime remixes of “De La” and “Canción De Aplauso.” Pimps of Joytime is the excellent neofunk band that Brian J also leads. On these two tasty remixes, the funk, and electronic level are skillfully cranked up along with an injection of Washington DC gogo.

This EP is just appetizer, giving listeners a taste of Gitkin’s upcoming album, scheduled for release in September 2020.
