Artist Profiles: Tiharea

Tiharea

Tiharea means wealth. It is also a trio of 3 childhood friends from southern Madagascar: Talike, Zetike and Sheilake. They grew up in the same region of the Androy. As kids, the childhood friends already sung traditional folk and local songs from Southern Madagascar. Music and singing has always been part of their daily family life. (in the choir and at the traditional ceremonies).

Talike, as a child was passionate by the culture of her mom’s ethnic group “the Antandroy”. She participated at every ceremonie. She wrote down the way they explain life. And so she started to compose her own songs.

Once in Europe, Talike founded her group Tiharea in 1998. The group won the “Kleurrijk Talent” world music contest in Rotterdam. This was the start of the international break-trough of her group. They also perfomed together with Senge (Malagasy men acappella-group), Stella Chiweshe (Zimbabwe mbira-player) and Régis Gizavo (Malagasy accordeonist) & David Mirandon (percussionist).

Tiharea’s polyphonic songs are performed in Antandroy, the language from Southern Madagascar. They speak about traditional ceremonies, the life of women, the misery and the mistreatment and the joy of life.
