Artist Profiles: Sean Doyle

Sean Doyle is a native of rural County Sligo, Ireland and father of prodigious guitar talent and singer, John Doyle. He is an avid collector and interpreter of traditional Irish song. From the old-style ballad singing made famous by The Clancy Brothers, to original arrangements of traditional songs to composing original music for the poetry of W. B. Yeats and others, Sean’s love, knowledge and enthusiasm for the tradition that he was brought up in is vast.

With a huge repertoire of many regional styles including songs from the grand ballad style, Gaelic poems, broadsheet and comic songs and sea shanties, he has created his own distinctive and eclectic personal style.

Sean sings regularly in various festivals, fleadhs and singer’s clubs throughout Ireland and has been a huge influence on John Doyle’s love and knowledge of song. Having only just recently retired from a career as a sergeant with the Gardai (the Irish Police force), he never had much time for performing.
