The Dagar Brothers

Ustad N. Zahiruddin Dagar and Ustad N. Faiyazuddin Dagar (vocals) were born in 1933 and 1934 respectively in Indore (Madhya Pradesh), India. They are the younger sons of Ustad Nasiruddin Khan Dagar, considered the leading exponent of dhrupad vocal music of his generation. Their rendering of Dagarbani Dhrupad is characterized by the meditative and leisurely development of their alap, stressing its devotional aspects.

For the furtherance and preservation of Dhrupad music, they taught and toured internationally. They formed the Dhrupad Society, with branches in Jaipur, Delhi, Paris and Japan. They ranked among the most highly recognized and respected vocalists in the East.

Both musicians died before the turn of the 21st century.
