Born in Salvador, Mariella Santiago had an early interest in music. She was influenced by her father, singer and composer Messias Santiago. Soon she developed her own style, combining jazz with samba and Afro-Bahian chants.

Her first recording came out in 2002 and it featured renowned guests such as Hermeto Pascoal, Gerônimo and Carlinhos Brown.

In the period of 1992 through 1995, Mariella performed standards and bossa classics, as well as Bahian music. In 1997 she developed the Virtopera project, together with German composer Eberhard Shoener. She also participated in the opera Black Beauty, inspired by Puccini’s Madame Butterfly.
