Artist Profiles: Cartola

Cartola

Angenor de Oliveira, better known as Cartola, was born October 11, 1908 in Catete, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He was one of the most significant composers of Rio’s music since he was 11 years old.

Without his creativity, bossa nova or other styles of samba would not have been possible. Although Cartola wrote for the Mangueira samba school a great number of wild and happy Sambas de Enredo, he is loved much more for his sentimental and restrained samba-cançoes, played with guitar, cavaquinho and pandeiro.

Cartola died November 30, 1980 in Rio de Janeiro.
