Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad – Make It Better (Rootfire Cooperative, 2016)
Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad is one of the most interesting groups I’ve found in recent years. Their albums switch back and forth between reggae, Americana and jam rock. Make It Better is solidly reggae, with a fabulous mix of roots reggae, dub effects, classics soul/funk and lots of deep bass.
Several of the songs hook you immediately and are instant classics, such as “What Kind of World” and “Gotta Make a Living.”
Make It Better shows a boy on the cover. The band conceived it as the journey a boy who no one will identify, although he is at the center of our global discussion.
The lineup includes James Searl on bass; Dylan Savage and Dan Keller on guitars, Chris O’Brian on drums; and Tony Gallicchio on keyboards. There are numerous guests including former band member Matt Goodwin.
