South African-raised world music star Johnny Clegg will be performing in Durham, North Carolina on Tuesday, March 22, 2016. This concert is part of his 34-date North American tour.
Clegg has been combining political and personal music, sung in Zulu and English, since 1969, originally with South Africa’s first interracial band, Juluka that recorded two platinum and five gold albums.
In 1985, Clegg founded another crossover band, Savuka. The band’s mix of modern and traditional African instrumentation with Clegg’s outspoken songs established them as international stars.
Since his first recordings in 1979, Johnny Clegg has sold over five million albums. Clegg’s most recent release is Best, Live & Unplugged At the Baxter Theatre, Cape Town (Appleseed Recordings, 2014).
One of Clegg’s current causes is raising money and awareness to combat a rising tuberculosis epidemic in South Africa.
The opening act at all the North American shows will be Johnny’s son, singer-songwriter/guitarist Jesse Clegg, who has recorded two well-received CDs and four South African Top Ten singles to date.
