Luzmila Carpio – Yuyay Jap’ina Tapes (Squirrel Thing Recordings, 2015)

The Yuyay Jap’ina Tapes is a selection of restored recordings that were originally made in the 1990s and released on cassette. Andean singer-songwriter Luzmila Carpio is one of Bolivia’s best known folk music artists. She sings in both Spanish and Quechua although the focus of the songs on Yuyay Jap’ina Tapes are her Quechua language songs, selected from her personal archives.

The pieces featured on Yuyay Jap’ina Tapes feature Luzmila Carpio on vocals and charango, Melian Sangueza Siñani on charango, and Juan Sangueza Agudo on quena and vocals. They are joined by various guests: Guido Alcalá on quena, Jorge Cuiza on guitar, Guillermo Cuiza on charango and sikus, Victoria Flores on vocals, Nicolasa Castro on vocals, Elvira Villca on vocals, Joel Flores Carpio on quena, and Juan De Dios Colque on charango.

While the songs are original compositions by Ludmila Carpio, they are inspired by the traditional indigenous music of the northern region of Potosi in Bolivia.
Ludmila Carpio’s lyrics celebrate the emancipation of women and also include songs of resistance against injustice and racial segregation of American Indians living in Bolivia.

The CD booklet includes 24 pages with lyrics credits and original photos from Ludmila Carpio’s personal archives.
