Spelemannsmøte

Norwegian accordion player, Tore Viken, recently celebrated his 70th anniversary, and wanted to accomplish a dream to mark the occasion. The vision that Tore had was that his folk musician friends would make a CD together. His friends and colleagues received his wish with enthusiasm, and thanks to a productive co-operation with EMCD, Etnisk Musikklubb and Skansen Lydstudio Tore’s dream has come true.

The Spelemannsmøte CD features many different musical traditions from places such as Gubrandsdalen, Røros, Oppdal and Telemark come together. The melodies are played on regular fiddle, Hardanger fiddle, diatonic button accordion and accordion. In this collection you will find the leading Norwegian folk musicians, people who have won both the national competitions in traditional music and old fashion dance music, Landskappleiken and Landsfestivalen.

Many of these melodies have an ancient sound and are Norway’s national treasures played in a masterly fashion. Some of the musicians include Tron Steffen Westberg, winner of Landskappleiken and the King’s trophy for solo fiddle in 1999; Leif Inge Schjølberg, winner of Landskappleiken for solo fiddle in 1994, 1995 and 1996; Andreas Bjørkås, winner of Landskappleiken for solo fiddle in 2003, 2010, 2012, 2013 (King’s trophy) and 2015; Astrid Sulheim, winner of Landskappleiken for solo fiddle in 2004 and 2011; Olav Luksengård Mjelva, winner of Landskappleiken for solo hardanger fiddle in 2008 and Spellemannsprisen (the Norwegian equivalent to the Grammy) in 2009; Ottar Kåsa, winner of Landskappleiken for solo hardanger fiddle 2011 (King’s trophy), 2012 and 2015 as well as Spellemannsprisen in 2012.
