Afro-Portuguese singer-songwriter Lura (Maria de Lurdes Assunção Pina) celebrates her Cape Verdean roots and global music on her new album titled Herança (Heritage).

Cape Verdean traditions featured on Herança include the lively uptempo funaná and batuque. Lura adds a touch of modern jazz that makes her style unique in this genre.

Herança’s highlights include the fabulous Cape Verdean-flamenco fusion song “Mantenha Cudado” written by influential musician, composer, poet, musicologist and current Minister of Culture of the Republic of Cape Verde, Mario Lúcio, featuring Pedro Jóia on on flamenco guitar.

Another highlight is the irresistible funaná “Ness Tempo di Nha Bidjissa” where Lura showcases her talent injecting jazz stylings and interacting with the electric guitar of Mario Varela.

On the mesmerizing title track “Herança” we find Lura’s vocals accompanied by famed Brazilian jazz percussionist Naná Vasconcelos.

The lineup on includes Lura on lead and background vocals; Toy Vieira on keyboards, acoustic guitar and background vocals; Mario Varela on electric guitar; Rolando Semedo on bass; Miroca on percussion; Valentino Ramos on drums; Guy N’Sangue on bass; Pedro Jóia on flamenco guitar; Zeca Mauricio on electric guitar; Jean-Pierre Gomes on bass; Alban Chapelle on saxophone; Elida Almeida on lead vocals; Hernani Almeida on guitars, acoustic piano; Nelly Cruz on bass and background vocals; N’Du on drums and percussion; Naná Vasconcelos on percussion and additional vocals; Richard Bona on acoustic guitar, bass, keyboards and percussion; Sylvain Luc on acoustic guitar and fretless guitar; Regis Gizavo on accordion; Valery Bai on percussion; Magikk Santiago on drums; Briscard on electric guitar; Patrick Marie-Magdeleine on guitar; Nana Almeida, Diego Gomes, Diego, Albertino, Nató, Fattu Diakite, Mario Marta, Sia Tolno and Anastácia on background vocals.

“Barco de Papel” in another high point. This delightful song features celebrated Cameroonian bassist, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Richard Bona. Here, Lura shows the connections between the music of the islands and mainland Africa.

 

 

Lura’s previous recordings include Di Korpu ku Alma (2004), M’Bem di Fora (2006), Eclipse (2009), and Best of (2010).

Herança conjures the best of Cape Verdean roots music combined with influences from other fine traditions in the world. Lura has risen to the top of the world music scene with this new recording.

Lura’s next performance will be October 30, 2015 at Festival Dei Populi in Florence (Firenze), Italy.
