De chatarra… corazón (Kasba Music, 2010)

De chatarra corazón is the debut album of José Pérez, better known as José “El Chatarra” (José, the junk guy), a charismatic artist from Reus in northeastern Spain. He plays lively mestizo music, mixing Gypsy rumba, funk, soul, reggae, and classic Andalusian rock with a punk attitude. The lyrics include stories about his neighborhood as well as a lot of good humor and sarcasm.

The band features José “El Chatarra” on vocals, Rafel Chocero “El jitano punky” on vocals and trumpet, Héctor Montuenga “El niño maravillas” on electric guitar, Cristobal Salazón “Tóbalo” on Spanish guitar, Jesús García “Chuky” on bass, and Humberto Perdomo “Caballo” on percussion.

Guests include Afrika on vocals, Juanlu “El Canijo” on bass, Diego Lezcano on drums and percussion, Gustavo “er pegata” on Spanish and electric guitar, Edu on Spanish guitar, and Laura Parado on backing vocals.

Before starting his own band, Jose “El Chatarra” played in various bands, including Van del Palo, Patxi and the Wailerz, A Voces and Game Over Selectors. His nickname, the junk man, derives from his occasional daytime job as a plumber. He drives a van full of copper and tools. Initially his band was called Joselito el Macarra y el Camión de la Chatarra (Joselito the hoodlum and the junk truck) but it was later shortened to “El Chatarra”.
