Gaadi of Truth (Sinj Records SR12015, 2015)
Gaadi of Truth is the 2015 release by Red Baraat, an American group that combines Punjabi percussion with brass, developing an exciting mix of bhangra, Bollywood influences, jazz, and Indian-style brass music with some electronic enhancements.
Most of the album features instrumental pieces set an irresistible dance beat that make Red Baraat a popular live act. On a handful of pieces, band members and a guest add rapping vocals, which ruins the atmosphere.
Highlights include the instrumentals ‘Horizon Line’, ‘Rang Barse’, ‘Layers’, ‘Bhangra Pirates’, and the Spanish language vocal piece ‘Se Hace Camino’. Although the best cut by far is the Karsh Kale remix of ‘Layers’.
The lineup includes bandleader Sunny Jain on dhol, Rohin Khemani on percussion, Tomas Fujiwara on drum set, Mike Bomwell on soprano & baritone saxophone, Jonathon Haffner on alto saxophone, Sonny Singh on trumpet, MiWi La Lupa on bass trumpet, Ernest Stuart on trombone, John Altieri on sousaphone. Guests featured are: rapper Mandeep Sethi on track 4 and Steve Marion on guitar on track 5.
The group’s previous recordings include Chaal Baby (2010) and Shruggy Ji (2012).
