Amira Medunjanin
Silk & Stone (World Village 450029, 2014)
Amira Medunjanin is one of the great voices from the Balkans. Hailing from Bosnia and Herzegovina she sings traditional sevdah, the passionate folk style that contains European, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern influences.
Her vocal style reveals a splendid classically-trained technique. Silk & Stone is her third album on World Village after Amulette (2011) and Zumra (2010).
Amira Medunjanin sings passionate and melancholic songs with captivating intensity. The musical arrangements by Serbian jazz pianist Bojan Zulfikarpašic (Bojan Z) and bass player Nenad Vasilic cross over between classical music and Bosnian folk music, mixing tasteful piano and guitar with enthralling oud and splendid kanun.
The lineup on Silk & Stone includes Amira Medunjanin on vocals; Bosko Jovic on guitar; Hakan Güngör on kanun; Yurdal Tokcan on oud; Bojan Zulfikarpasic on piano; and Vasilic Nenad on double bass.
Amira Medunjanin is getting well-deserved exposure in the international music scene thanks to her performance at Trafalgar Square in the BT River of Music event preceding the 2102 London Olympics, her 2013 showcase at WOMEX, the largest world music expo, and her guest appearance on Jordi Savall’s Bal-Kan: Honey and Blood album and tour.
Silk & Stone is a delightful album that celebrates the sevdah tradition of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
