Jazz Great and New Age-World Music Pioneer, Paul Horn, Dies at 84

Internationally acclaimed American jazz flute player and composer Paul Horn passed away Sunday morning, June 29, 2014 after a brief illness. He was 84.

Paul Horn was born March 17, 1930. He played jazz with Chico Hamilton’s Quintet, the Duke Ellington Orchestra’s Suite Thursday and worked with Nat King Cole, Tony Bennett and others.

In the late 1960s he started a series of recordings in magnificent spaces across the world. Some of these meditative recordings became popular among new age music fans: Paul Horn In India (1967), Paul Horn In Kashmir (1967), Inside (1969), Inside II, (1972), Inside the Great Pyramid (1976), Inside the Cathedral (1983), Inside the Taj Mahal, Volume 2 (1989), Inside Canyon de Chelly (1997) with R. Carlos Nakai, and Inside Monument Valley (1999) with R. Carlos Nakai.

Horn is survived by his wife Ann Mortifee, his sons Robin and Marlen, stepson Devon, 4 grandchildren -Brittany, Tyler, Jonah, Ana- and daughters in-law Robin, Alison and Beth.

The family has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support from people around the world who admired Horn as a musician and respected him as a man of great integrity and deep philosophical principles.

A private memorial-celebration of life is being planned.
