Rajasthan Folk, Volume 1 (Vale Entertainment, 2006)
The 10 tracks on this CD provide close to an hour of authentic Rajasthani folk music from the Langas and Manganiars groups. Supported by wealthy landlords and aristocrats over the years, the groups sing in the same dialect but different styles and for different audiences.
The Muslim Langas sing for both Hindu and Muslim communities, while the Manganiars sing only for the Hindu community. Featured instruments include sarangi, khamaicha, algoza, dholak and khartal. The profiled songs celebrate life and gallantry, marriage and harvests, childbirth and monsoons. Also see also our earlier review of the album ‘Discover India: Rajasthan” by Kohinoor Langa and Party.
