Spain’s Gypsy Flamenco Masters Heading to New York City in 2012

Festival Flamenco Gitano, presented by the World Music Institute, will bring together many of Spain’s greatest Gypsy artists during October 2012 in programs that offer the joy and passion of flamenco.

Featured are a rare appearance with the electrifying vocalist José Mercé (October 5); Fiesta Jerez, an intimate gathering of artists from Jerez de la Frontera – a hotbed of Gypsy flamenco – that feels less like a stage production and more like a Gypsy family celebration in Andalusia (October 6); the New York debut of 14-year-old prodigy El Carpeta, the legendary Farruco family’s new torchbearer, and a return of the Farruco family matriarch, La Farruca (October 7).

There will also be a new program with superstar singer Diego el Cigala, known widely for his breakthrough work in flamenco, tango and Latin jazz, who will be returning to his roots in traditional flamenco (November 3).

Festival Flamenco Gitano is made possible in part with public support from the New York State Council on the Arts, a State agency, and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.

The Festival is also made possible in part with support from Spain Arts & Culture, Embassy of Spain in the USA, Spain Culture New York-Consulate General of Spain in New York, and Anupam & Rajika Puri.

The November 3rd event with Diego el Cigala is participating in the 7th Annual Latin American Cultural Week, produced by PAMAR.
