Discover India: Rajasthan – Silence of the Desert (Saregama)
This is a compilation of folk music from Rajasthan, and will particularly appeal to purists of culture and tradition. Unlike other lounge remixes of Rajasthani music, this album presents authentic folk music from the communities of the Langas and Mangariyas.
The 10 tracks cover a range of vocals, percussion, chants, and instrumental pieces. Our pick includes the hearty track Algoza. Those looking for contemporary urban music can look elsewhere, but this album is a good tribute to the folk roots of Indian music. Unfortunately the production of the CD case and liner notes are shockingly amateurish, but don’t let this deter you.
