Loreena McKennitt
A Mediterranean Odyssey (Quinlan Road, 2009)
The great Canadian singer and multi-instrumentalist Loreena McKennitt has a new beautifully packaged two-CD set titled A Mediterranean Odyssey. The remarkable collection showcases studio and live performances by McKennitt, her band and various guests. The first disc, titled From Istanbul to Athens, includes 56 minutes of concert highlights from the 2009 Mediterranean tour. The tour included concerts in Turkey, Cyprus, Greece, Lebanon, Hungary (a landlocked nation relatively near the Mediterranean) and Italy. Some of the songs have never before been recorded live. It also includes an attractive 24-page booklet with lavish illustrations and photos from the tour.
"It was a great pleasure to share our music in so many magnificent historic locations in parts of the world which have long fascinated me, especially since the last studio recordings have been inspired by tracing the history of the Celts in this region," says McKennitt.
The second CD, The Olive and the Cedar, is a compilation of 11 studio versions of songs personally selected by Loreena from her catalog. The CD is inspired by the history of the Celts around the Aegean, the Mediterranean, North Africa and the near East.
Although many associate Loreena McKennitt exclusively with Celtic music, she has been exploring various cultures outside the Celtic music realm for several years. Her hybrid mix includes Celtic, Medieval, Middle Eastern and pan-Mediterranean musical influences.
With A Mediterranean Odyssey, internationally acclaimed vocalist and harpist Loreena McKennitt introduces the listener to a fascinating musical adventure across the sultry waters of the northern and eastern Mediterranean.
