Capeverdean songstress Carmen Souza will perform at Chicago Cultural Center on Monday, April 27, 7 pm at Preston Bradley Hall. Souza (27) was born in Lisbon, [wiki:Portugal], but was always surrounded by the tradition, music and costumes of Cape Verde. Souza has a sweet and versatile smooth voice that fits well in these mellifluous, airy tunes which bear a just a hint of the sodade of Cape Verde – the longing that comes from exile, and a light percussive touch and brightness that recalls the music of those other lusophone countries, Brazil and Guinea-Bissau.
Souza has been carving out her own Afro-European [wiki:jazz] niche with the release of her latest album Verdade (Truth). Chicago Cultural Center is located at 78 East Washington Street. Admission is free.
