Klezmerquerque Will Bring Klezmer Sounds to New Mexico

Albuquerque (New Mexico), USA – Klezmerquerque – Albuquerque’s annual Klezmer music and dance festival celebrates its seventh year February 12-15, 2009. Produced by Nahalat Shalom, this annual klezmer celebration presents 4 days of concerts, dance parties, classes and workshops featuring the world-renowned Strauss/Warschauer Klezmer Duo—Deborah Strauss & Jeff Warschauer; and the acclaimed dancer, choreographer, dance scholar, teacher and historian Judith Brin Ingber.

‘Klezmer’ is the music and dance of the Jewish people of Eastern Europe which is currently enjoying a revival in the world music scene as well as in popular music and culture. The 20-piece intergenerational Nahalat Shalom Community Klezmer band will be celebrating the release of its first full length CD and will be performing on Friday and Saturday evenings.

The Rebbe’s Orkestra-the popular Albuquerque-based klezmer and Judaic ensemble will also perform both evenings. The festival begins on Thursday evening, February 12th at 7pm, with a "hands-on" klezmer music workshop taught by the Strauss/Warschauer Duo. The $20.00 price for this workshop includes admission to the Friday evening event on February 13th, which begins at 6:30pm and also features a vegetarian potluck dinner, and some Sephardic wedding dances taught and led by dance artist Judith Brin Ingber.

The price for Friday alone is a $15-$18 suggested donation. On Saturday, February 14th from 9:30-11:00am-choose one of 2 classes: the Strauss Warschauer Duo will lead another "hands-on" klezmer music workshop. Brin Ingber will teach dances from the Eastern European Jewish wedding repertoire. Classes cost $20-general and $16 for seniors, students and fixed income.

From noon-2pm there will be a catered ‘Lunch ‘n Powerpoint Presentation’ followed by a Q & A session with Brin Ingber: "Why Jews Aren’t Just People of the Book" with rare and historic dance illustrations and music for Jewish dance in far flung communities through the ages: $8-$15 suggested donation.

From 2:15pm-3:45pm the Klezmer Duo will lead "Making your instrument sing in Yiddish", a hands-on workshop for everyone: $20-general admission /$16 for seniors, students & fixed income. At 7pm (DOORS @ 6:30pm) Brin Ingber will perform two dances. "The Argument" accompanied by the chanting of Rabbi Deborah Brin, and "Roles Not Taken" a dance combining music theatre, ballet and Israeli folk dance presenting a surprising view on issues of Jewish identity.

The evening culminates with a concert and a dance party by the Strauss/Warschauer Duo. Brin Ingber will also lead dances that she taught in her morning class. Sunday, February 15th from 11am-12:30pm choose one of 3 classes: Brin Ingber will teach more dances from an East European Jewish wedding as well as a review of the dances taught on Saturday. Strauss will lead a klezmer instrumental workshop, and Warschauer will lead a Yiddish song workshop. One class is $20-general / $16-seniors, students and fixed income.

The advanced registration price for all events is $90.00-general / $75-seniors, students and fixed income and registration and payment must be received by or before Thursday, February 12th for this discount.
