Gato Barbieri at S.O.B.’s World Jazz Cafe

On Sunday, October 14th, S.O.B.’s  presents Grammy award-winning Argentine jazz legend Gato Barbieri, kicking off a brand new weekly series, World Jazz Café. World Jazz Café will feature an early and late show every Sunday night, food will be served and the air will be filled with the soothing sounds of jazz musicians from all around the globe.
 
On October 14th, Gato Barbieri will be celebrating his 75th birthday, along with S.O.B’s 25th Anniversary. The performance will be a spirited one, as Gato and his fans eagerly await the 2008 release of Intimate Portrait: Gato Barbieri, the first comprehensive compilation of his work, which has been restricted until now due to conflicting record companies owning the recordings.A true ambassador of Latin jazz, Gato Barbieri plays clarinet and tenor saxophone and has performed around the world, while living in Argentina and Rome. While playing in Argentina in the 1960’s, he collaborated with American contemporaries Coleman Hawkins, Herbie Mann, and Dizzy Gillespie and Brazilian bossa innovator Joao Gilberto.

Forty years later, his most recent and 50th album, Shadow of the Cat, won Billboard’s prestigious Latin Jazz Album of the Year in 2003 and since, he has headlined the Ozawa Concert Hall at the Boston symphony Orchestra’s Tanglewood Jazz Festival, which was broadcast over eight National Public Radio stations, and The Puerto Rico Heineken Jazz Festival where he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Long Island University’s WLIU.

Sunday, October 14th will be Gato’s first performance in New York in over a year the first since he announced the release of Portrait: Gato Barbieri. After 25 years, while S.O.B.’s is focused on bringing New York the cutting edge in Latin music, they remain faithful to tradition and Gato Barbieri has something for fans of all ages and walks of life.
