The Netherlands – Director Carlos Saura, maker of the great dramatic films Flamenco, Tango and Salomé among others, has now decided to take a closer look at Fado after falling in love with the music. The film, which is a part of trilogy will expose Lisbon and the music within. The film will present some of the best Fado singers in Portugal and Mariza will have a leading role. The film is still under development and will have its premiere in Cannes 2007.British world music writer Simon Broughton is telling the story about Fado and Mariza for the BBC. The documentary is filmed in Portugal and features Mariza in concert but also in smaller, intimate clubs.
The story of the film starts already in the beginning of the 19th century, showing archive footage with among others Amalia Rodrigues, and continues until today and the modern Fado. The clips from Lisbon itself points out the atmosphere for Fado and bring the viewer even further into the secret of Fado.
