From the desert heartland of the Navajo Nation comes the stirring voice of
talented singer and songmaker Jay Begaye.
The Colorful World, marks the fifth
recording by Jay released by Canyon Records. Reflecting the rich beauty of
Navajo culture, this collection of vocal performances with drum accompaniment is
sung by one of Native America’s greatest voices in honor of his beloved people.
Respected throughout Native America, Begaye is known for his beautiful songs and
singing. The round dances and traditional Navajo songs presented on this album
carry with them the vibrant colors of the Navajo people through his enchanting
voice.
Several of his recordings have earned both critical and popular acclaim. His
recording
Round Dance in Beauty was a 2001 AFIM Indie Awards finalist and also
earned him Best Male Artist and Best Traditional Recording nominations at the
2001 Native American Music Awards. His album
Song of Colors also earned a
nomination at the 2004 Indian Summer Music Awards.
Jay Begaye is a singer, songwriter, painter, sculptor and former rodeo
contestant. He was bom and raised on the Navajo Reservation in the small town of
Steamboat Canyon, Arizona. Having spent many years living and working in Canada,
Jay is happy to be back amongst his people in Navajoland. Since his return, Jay
had enjoyed teaching art at Ganado Middle School for the past few years.
Recently Jay made the difficult decision to leave teaching to dedicate himself
to pursuing his visual art and music.
