Swiss Red Cross Appoints Singer Omara Portuondo as Ambassador

(Prensa Latina) Geneva, Switzerland – Swiss Red Cross appointed famous Cuban singer

Portuondo
as
its
ambassador, to continue supporting this institution with her music and
example.

Martin Fuhrer, director of the Swiss Red Cross International Cooperation
Switzerland, granted the title to the Cuba’s diva during a ceremony held in
Montreaux.Fuhrer thanked Omara for her work, her solidarity and selfless support and
her commitment to the poor in the world. He announced that the Cuban diva will contribute to the Swiss Red Cross work
through her music and example to help the victims of natural disasters and
hunger in the world, and long for a new horizon for their lives.

The ceremony, attended by Omara and her band, diplomats and friends from
Montreaux, followed with a speech by the organizer of the city´s cultural
events.
He highlighted the singer’s brilliant professional career and the important
contribution of Cuba to arts, mainly via its worldwide famous traditional
music.

Omara appreciated the gesture and reiterated her disposition to defend the
poorest sectors. She emphasized it was Cuba’s work for the poor people of
the world and the support of musicians in her career that had earned the
award.
