Camané and Dead Combo, two of Portugal’s most exciting musical acts are set to perform on March 15, 2015 at NJPAC Prudential Hall in Newark, New Jersey. Fado star Camané will be sharing the bill groundbreaking instrumental duo Dead Combo .

Camané was the protagonist of last year’s documentary film Fado Camané, directed by Bruno Almeida (who previously directed The Art of Amália, based on the life and work of the iconic fado singer Amália Rodrigues).

Dead Combo became well known outside Portugal after they made an appearance on Anthony Bourdain’s celebrated food program No Reservations in 2012. Their music will be featured in the upcoming Will Smith film Focus, which will surely extend their visibility worldwide.

The NJPAC concert marks the only joint appearance by the two Portuguese artists during their current, separate U.S. tours.

The double bill also marks a first for Newark’s NJPAC: never before has the venue, located in the heart of one of the largest Portuguese communities in the United States, presented a male fado singer. Every major female star of fado, including Mariza and Dulce Pontes, has performed at the influential performing arts center. Camané is a rare male superstar within the female-dominated fado world, following in the footsteps of the legendary male fado singer Carlos do Carmo.

A deeply emotional and elegant vocalist, Camané (born Carlos Manuel Moutinho) has sold over six million recordings in a country whose population exceeds just 10 million.

Dead Combo features Tó Trips on electric guitar, acoustic guitar; and Pedro V. Gonçalves on double bass, electric guitar, melodics, keyboards. Their music is described as a contemporary mix of fado, Ennio Morricone-inspired guitar twang and elements of jazz, alternative and world music, best exemplified on their recent album release, last year’s A Bunch of Meninos (meninos=boys).

Camané and Dead Combo have collaborated on recordings, including “Inquietação,” “Vendaval” and “Ouvi o texto muito ao longe.”
