Roopa Panesar to Perform at Women’s Voices festival in New York

Sitarist Roopa Panesar will make hew New York debut on Saturday, October 4 at 7:30 pm at St. Peter’s Church.

Roopa Panesar has fscinated audiences with her distinctive style and emotional depth of her sound. She began training at the age of seven with sitar maestro Ud. Sharambir Singh. She later learned from such great masters as Pt. Arvind Parikh, Ud. Hahid, Ud. Bahauddin Dagar, Ud. Siraj Khan and Pt. Ajoy Chakroborty.

Roopa has toured Europe and the United States to critical acclaim, recorded music for the soundtrack of the film West is West, performed as a guest artist at the John Lennon Tribute Concert at the Liverpool Echo Arena, appeared with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO), and released her debut album Khoj. She will be accompanied on tabla by Gurdain Rayatt, a prominent disciple of Pt. Shankar Ghosh.

 

 

One of the best tabla players of his generation in the UK, Gurdain Rayatt studied the tabla from his father Harkirat Singh, his grandfather Bhai Gurmit Singh Virdee and is a prominent disciple of Pandit Shankar Ghosh. Based in North London, he has performed at various prestigious festivals and venues inside and outside India and regularly teaches tabla classes in the London area.
