Manu Chao and Alexandre Carlo Join Playing For Change’s Amazon Advocacy Project

Playing For Change has released “Acontecer,” a new international collaboration that calls attention to the protection of the Amazon, Indigenous communities, and the environment. The track features Dani Lança, French-Spanish star Manu Chao, and Alexandre Carlo of Natiruts, alongside musicians from several countries.

The release forms part of the Song Around The World series, which combines performances recorded by artists in different locations into a single production. In addition, the accompanying video highlights environmental threats, human rights concerns, and development projects affecting Indigenous territories and traditional communities.

In Brazil, Amazon Watch has supported the campaign and drawn attention to the proposed mining project of Belo Sun Mining Corp. The company plans to develop a large open-pit gold mine in the Volta Grande do Xingu region of Pará. The area has already experienced significant environmental and social effects linked to the Belo Monte Dam and is home to Indigenous and river communities.

Written by Dani Lança and Manu Chao, “Acontecer” presents “Mamazonia” as a poetic symbol of the rainforest. The song repeatedly asks, “Que vai passar?” (“What will happen?”), a question that reflects concerns about climate change and the future of communities that protect forests, rivers, and ancestral territories.

The release extends Playing For Change’s ongoing partnership with Manu Chao. Previous collaborations between the organization and the artist include “Clandestino,” “Seeds of Freedom,” “Soul Rebel,” and “Tantas Tierras.”
