Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen Recreate Bluegrass Classic, ‘Looking Past You’

Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen, two-time IBMA Instrumental Group of the Year winners, have rolled out their first single for Turnberry Records. “Looking Past You,” written by Pat Flynn, and originally recorded by New Grass Revival, will appear on the band’s upcoming album.

“Looking Past You” is a superb Pat Flynn bluegrass classic that Frank Solivan first heard New Grass Revival perform live. It had a hook so undeniable it stayed with him for decades until the moment finally felt right to make it his own. “That hook is so damn catchy it never left me. I’ve been wanting to cut this one for years, and we finally did. Man, it felt right.”

The band recorded live, in one room, together. The natural microphone bleed, room warmth, and all the energy of a live performance was captured on tape. The track features Frank Solivan on lead vocals and mandolin; Mike Munford on banjo; Jack Dunlap on guitar and low harmonies; and Cody Brown on upright bass. Former band member and longtime musical friend Jeremy Middleton returned to the studio to add extra harmony vocals.

New Grass Revival members reacted to this new version of “Looking Past You”:

A lovely surprise to hear a great version of Pat Flynn’s New Grass Revival standard, filtered and inhabited by these talented musicians,” said Bela Fleck.

Songwriter Pat Flynn commented: “I’m honored that you guys chose to record it, but even more so that you killed on it. No bigger compliment than that the next generation would want to put their brand on a song of mine.”

John Cowan expressed: “What a treasure and what a thrill it is to hear them on this recording of one of my favorite Pat Flynn/NGR songs. And, they’re off Ladies & Gentlemen — prepare the Checkered Flag!

And, lastly, Sam Bush shared: “Tight and right! Having not heard that song for a long while, brings back some good musical memories. Way to go!!!
