Triana y Luca – Fragmentos del Olvido (Triana y Luca, 2023)
Fragmentos del Olvido is a collection of stories and sounds sewn into different styles and rhythms. Triana y Luca present an eclectic mix of skillfully crafted chamber folk, a cappella vocals, and improvisation, while incorporating traditional instruments like the bombo legüero and cuatro venezolano. Notably, the EP is intimate, heartfelt, and musically daring.
Triana y Luca explore their own identities as migrants and their diasporic Spanish & Latin American roots. Neither grew up playing folk music; but together, they explore stories lost in translation and bring their own contemporary take on traditional music. Their delightful compositions take inspiration from passionate styles like flamenco, son jarocho, boleros, rancheras, and música llanera, while at the same time influenced by their backgrounds in improvisation, jazz, and poetry.
When the duo first met two years ago, living in a cold country far away from their homes, they realized they had something very significant in common. Both of us were from everywhere and from nowhere. Moreover, they wanted to reconnect with their roots, the traditions of their cultures, which felt far and distant to them. And funnily enough, they had some of those roots in common. Triana y Luca started making music because we wanted to learn about their Iberoamerican folkloric traditions. Today, through their music, Triana y Luca explore legends, storytelling, and popular music styles.
The two artists share eclectic cultural backgrounds. Triana Segovia has Mexican/Spanish/Canadian ancestry, while Luca Vaillancourt has Canadian/Spanish/Luxembourgish roots. Currently, they live
