Artist Profiles: Retimbrar (Portugal)

Retimbrar is an evolving musical collective from Porto that explores deep Portuguese traditional rhythms, songs, and instruments. Inspired by the country’s musical traditions, TugaBeat is the name they give to their sound, Portuguese beats and songs, made new. The ensemble is deeply rooted in the diversity of Portuguese folklore, popular poetry and orality, chanting and percussive elements.

The collective was created in 2008 by Andrés’ Pancho’ Tarabbia, a Uruguayan percussionist based in Portugal. He was later joined by António Serginho.

The lineup usually includes eight to ten musicians, including percussionists, along with vocalists and other instrumentalists. However, the band’s albums features numerous musicians.

Retimbrar’s performances are interactive, and the ensemble frequently holds pre-event workshops.

The album Voa Pé featured: Afonso Passos – bass drum, timbalão, adufe, reco-reco, marbles, bucket with screws, backing vocals; André Nunes – timbalão, adufe, wires, cymbal, backing vocals; André Rodrigues – bass drum, timbalão, adufe, bidombo, backing vocals; Andrés Tarabbia “Pancho” – bass drum, timbalão, triangle, adufe, Mirandese tambourine, bottle, barrel, wah-wah tube, bell tree, other small percussion instruments; António Serginho – snare drum, war snare, snare with brushes, caixombo, bass drum, adufe, trancanholas, cowbells, tambourine, marimba, bidombo, martelinhos de S. João (St. John’s hammers), backing vocals; Francisco “Killo” Beirão – timbalão, snare with brushes, adufe, bidombo, drawer, log, backing vocals; João Grilo – piano, melodica; Miguel Arruda – mandolin; Nuno Xandinho – Portuguese guitar, cowbell, triangle, backing vocals; Rita Sá – vocals, trécula; Rui Ferreira “Caps” – acoustic bass, electric bass, steel-string guitar, accordion, cavaquinho; Rui Rodrigues – mandolin, adufe, backing vocals; Sara Yasmine – vocals, timbalão; Tiago Soares – timbalão, adufe, tamboril, plastic tubes, trancanholas, snare drum.

The GUESTS on the album are: Alexandre Meirinhos – tambourine on “Corre Mundo”; António Augusto Aguir “Togú” – double bass on “Memória”; Catarina Valadas – vocals and flute on “Voa Pé”; Nicô Tricot – flute on “Memória”; and Renato Monteiro – classical guitar on “Corre Mundo” and “Memória”
