Artist Profiles: Los Guanches

Los Guanches

Los Guanches perpetuate the cultural tradition of Santiago de Cuba’s music, full of great figures that make it prestigious and universal. They are the “younger” contribution to Santiago’s traditional music, played with the same quality and veracity as the “veterans”, with whom they have shared, and continue to share feelings, experiences, jams and late night performances. All their knowledge is due to the musical reality that can only be found in Santiago de Cuba. The band was formed in the late 1990s.

Los Guanches is the name given to Canary Islanders, many of whom emigrated to Cuba in the 19th and 20th centuries. The group is the result of a division which split one of the leading Cuban bands, Cuarteto Patria. Two of Cuarteto Patria’s members, bassist Armando Machado and percussionist Joaquín Solorzano formed Los Guanches.
