Manannan’s Cloak (Wardfell Records, 2015)
Barrule is a Celtic music superband formed by a trio of outstanding musicians from the Isle of Man and Wales. Manannan’s Cloak is Barrule’s new album. The title of the album refers to a Celtic sea god that used fog and mist to protect the island from invaders.
Manannan’s Cloak features a set of traditional Manx songs and dances that includes jigs and reels recreated with captivating contemporary Celtic music arrangements featuring virtuosic performances by the three musicians.
The lineup includes fiddle maestro Tomas Callister, one of the finest musicians in the Manx music landscape, celebrated Welsh accordionist Jamie Smith (who lads his own Welsh band, Mabon), and guitarist and bouzouki performer Adam Rhodes, who’s been at the forefront of the Manx music revitalization.
Guests include Scottish musicians Paul McKenna (vocals) and Calum Stewart on uilleann pipes, folk artists Dylan Fowler on lap steel and Tad Sargent on bodhrán, plus Manx musicians David Kilgallon (piano) and Gregory Joughin (vocals).
Manannan’s Cloak was recorded in December 2014 in the significant St. Bridget’s Chapel, in the Isle of Man’s Nunnery grounds, produced by bassist Andy Seward (who’s worked with Kate Rusby, Martin Simpson).
Located in the Irish Sea between Great Britain and Ireland, the Isle of Man is a small island with rich Gaelic traditions.
