The internationally acclaimed Celtic supergroup Capercaillie will team up with an all-star cast of piping talent at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall for a very special one-off show on 13th August as part of Piping Live! 2010. Capercaillie will be joined by special guests The Spirit of Scotland Pipers – a distinguished group of some of the world’s finest solo pipers.

The pipe corps of the Spirit of Scotland Pipe Band, The Spirit of Scotland Pipers are led by Pipe Major Roddy MacLeod MBE, and includes Willie McCallum (winner of 8 Glenfiddich titles), Cameron Drummond (double silver medalist in 2009), the former director of the Army School of Bagpipe Music Stuart Samson MBE, Finlay MacDonald (Head of Piping Studies at the RSAMD), Dr. Simon McKerrell (the former Head of Piping Studies), Alasdair Gillies, Iain Speirs, Colin MacLellan, Brian Donaldson and Angus MacColl. Also appearing in the show are international guests Eliot Grasso (uilleann piper from the United States of America) and Luigi Lai (triple pipes from Sardinia). The concert is Capercaillie’s Piping Live! debut and will see the band pay tribute to the fact that they have been greatly influenced by the piping tradition.

Donald Shaw, founding member of Capercaillie, said: “This is the first time we have performed at the Piping Live! festival. We’re really delighted to be part of it as it gives us a chance to pay homage to the fact that so much of our music comes from the piping tradition.

“It will be an honour to collaborate with the Spirit of Scotland Pipers and perform alongside some of the greatest pipers in the world. We actually went to school in Oban with one of the pipers – Angus MacColl – and he was involved with our first ever radio broadcast, so it will be a truly special occasion for us and we’re very much looking forward to it.”

Glasgow’s Concert Halls will play host to a number of other Piping Live! events this August, including a performance by The Battlefield Band, the International Quartet Competition, and Pipes and Strings featuring Allan MacDonald, Rob McKillop, Finlay MacDonald and Chris Stout.

The international piping festival, which takes place in Glasgow between 9th – 15th August, will culminate with the incredible spectacle of The World Pipe Band Championships at Glasgow Green, followed by the After Worlds Shindig at the Old Fruitmarket, featuring the high octane 13-piece Celtic supergroup Treacherous Orchestra, the pipes, guitar and fiddle powerhouse Breabach and the legendary pipes of Fred Morrison, rounded off with a foot-stompin ceilidh.
