The first name on the list is the pioneering Latin jazz pianist Eddie Palmieri. The 75-year-old salsa trendsetter and multiple Grammy award-winner added another prize to his collection last week when NEA (National Endowment for the Arts) honored him with the NEA Jazz Masters’ Award 2013.The “Wild Man of Salsa” appears in concert on July 27th at 8.30 p.m.
Band leader, vibraphonist and composer Guga Stroeter – brother of Rodolfo Stroeter (Pau Brasil Project) – lets loose the results of his creative research into the development of Afro-Cuban and Afro-Brazilian musical cultures involving samba, candomblé, santería, salsa and jazz. Guga Stroeter and Agô Reverb will appear in concert on August 3rd at 7 p.m.
Quantic Soul Orchestra’s Will Holland adds jazz samples to his mix. Now the enthusiast is appearing at Wassermusik with the cumbia project Ondatrópica: the recording brought more than the odd salsa and cumbia legend to the studio in Bogóta. Now they are on tour in the flesh, featuring first and foremost Michi Sarmiento. The Ondatrópica live formation appears in concert on August 4th, 8.30 p.m. Quantic’s most recent album is the highly-acclaimed “Apricot Morning.”
Also performing at Wassermusik: Pakistani guitarist Rez Abbasi, who recorded his latest album (released on the Munich-based Enja label) with pianist Vijay Iyer. Before that, he worked with Ruth Brown, Peter Erskine and Marc Copland, to name but a few. He is performing on stage with Kiran Ahluwalia, who won this year’s prestigious Juno Award, the Canadian equivalent of the Grammy. July 28th, 8.30 p.m.
