A double bill featuring Tamikrest and Dirtmusic will take place on Wednesday, 19 May 2010 at 7pm in London at The Borderline. Tamikrest, led by 27-year-old singer/ songwriter/ guitarist Ousmane Ag Mossa, are a desert blues/ rock band singing in Tamashek, the language of the Tuareg (nomadic people inhabiting the Saharan desert across various countries, including Niger, Algeria, Libya and Mali). They can be seen as the “spiritual sons” of Tinariwen. Their debut album ‘Adagh‘ (out now on Glitterhouse Records) was recorded at the famous Studio Bogolan in Bamako (which was founded by the late Ali Farka Toure) and produced by Chris Eckman of Dirtmusic.
Dirtmusic consists of American and Australian rock’n’rollers Chris Eckman (The Walkabouts, Willard Grant Conspiracy), Chris Brokaw (Evan Dando and The Lemonheads, Liz Phair, Thurston Moore) and Hugo Race (True Spirit, The Bad Seeds). Their album ‘Bko‘ (released by Glitterhouse Records on 19 April 2010) was recorded at Studio Bogolan. For the recordings Dirtmusic were backed by Tamikrest who they had first met at the Festival in the Desert. The album also features Fadimata Walet Oumar from the famous Tuareg group Tartit who lends her sublime vocals to “Desert Wind” and “All Tomorrow’s Parties” (the classic Velvet Underground track).
Two master musicians from Toumani Diabate’s Symmetric Orchestra jam on the abstract piece “Niger Sundown”, while guitar legend Lobi Traoré plays on closing track “Bring It Home”.
