As the world spotlight turns on China with the upcoming Olympics, Dún Laoghaire will welcome Chinese singer Sa Dingding to its annual celebration of global music – the Festival of World Cultures, presented by Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council. The concert will take place at the Pavilion Theatre on Sunday August 24, 2008 at| 8pm.

Often labeled the ‘Chinese Bjork’, Sa Dingding, an outspoken and highly talented singer, will perform at the Pavilion Theatre, headlining the three-day Dún Laoghaire festival.

This will be the only Irish date from ‘China’s new queen of electronica’ and 2008 BBC Radio 3 World Music Award winner who is poised to make a major effect on the international music scene, with concerts across Europe this summer.

Sa Dingding’s fusion of Chinese and Tibetan cultures brings a new dimension to Ireland’s foremost celebration of world music. Her beguiling mix of modern and ancient presents an intriguing and topical feast for the hungry Western ear.

Born high in the grasslands of Inner Mongolia, Dingding’s ethnic heritage has instilled in her a philosophical approach to music. She explains; ‘Before we start to talk, we know how to sing‘.

Her live performances are quickly becoming a thing of legend. A full band of Chinese folk musicians play the zheng, bamboo flute and ma tou qin (fiddle) combined with electric guitars, keyboard washes and digital beats, as well martial artists and oriental dancers. Signed to Universal Records, Sa Dingding’s album Alive has sold 2 million copies in her homeland and received rave reviews on its recent release in Europe.
