Santrofi and Berlin Afrobeat Company to Celebrate Fela Kuti at HKW

Ghanaian highlife group Santrofi and the Berlin Afrobeat Company will perform at Berlin’s Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) on October 15 for A Felasophical Gathering, the venue’s annual event dedicated to Fela Kuti.

Held each year on October 15, the program focuses on Kuti’s work as a musician, activist, political figure and thinker. Musicians, scholars, activists, and storytellers take part in the event, which considers his artistic and intellectual legacy from several perspectives.

This year’s program features Santrofi, an Accra-based ensemble rooted in Ghanaian highlife. The band’s discography includes Alewa (Out Here Records, 2020) and Making Moves (OutHere Records, 2025).

Berlin Afrobeat Company will open the concert. The ensemble traces its origins to West Berlin in 1978, after Fela Kuti and Africa 70 performed at the Berlin Jazz Days. Several musicians associated with that period subsequently remained in the city, which helped establish a local community connected to Afrobeat.

A Felasophical Gathering takes place Thursday, October 15, 2026, at 7 p.m. in HKW’s Miriam Makeba Auditorium. Tickets cost €24, with reduced admission available for €20.
