Carlos Beceiro, an Influential Musician in Spain’s Traditional and World Fusion Scene

Carlos Beceiro, born in Narón (A Coruña), began his musical journey studying Galician bagpipes under Antón Varela during the regional folk revival. He later pursued formal training in solfège, harmony, and classical double bass at the Royal Conservatory of Madrid, while also delving into jazz with bassist Dave Thomas.

As his versatility grew, Beceiro performed with jazz-fusion groups such as I.S.P., the Lorenzo Azcona Quartet, and the Big Band of the Escuela de Música Creativa. In 1987, he co-founded La Musgaña, a seminal folk ensemble that has since toured extensively across international stages.

From 1992 onward, he has collaborated regularly with Luis Delgado on multidisciplinary productions, including Alquibla and Las Tres Culturas. Beyond performance, Beceiro has taught various instruments since 1993 and worked with notable artists like Carlos Núñez and Kepa Junkera. Currently, he is active in the projects Evening Star and The Irish Spanish Connection.

In 2024, Beceiro’s band Brïme de Ürz released the album Brïme de Ürz on Lubican Records. The group combines innovative instrumentation with a consistent spirit of improvisation, drawing deeply from traditional music. Their sound incorporates accordion, soprano saxophone, bass clarinet, hurdy-gurdy, and bouzouki to create fresh sounds and explore new musical directions. As a result, the ensemble offers a dynamic interpretation of folk traditions, bridging past legacies, present experimentation, and future possibilities.
