Women of the World, an eclectic ensemble comprised of five exceptional women from various continents and an eleven-piece international band will be performing at Carnegie Hall March 15, 2011, at Weill Recital Hall.
From their beginnings at Berklee in 2008, the ensemble soon created a stir on the world music scene, receiving support from renowned artists such as vocal maestro, Bobby McFerrin. In 2010, they shared the stage with the iconic African vocalist, Angelique Kidjo. The group has also supported various causes including fundraisers for the Haiti earthquake and Pakistani flood victims.
With their upcoming Carnegie Hall performance, Women of the World will present unique arrangements of traditional folk music from around the world. Audiences can expect a diverse and emotionally charged performance of Bulgarian, Latino, Italian, Brazilian, African, Indian, and Japanese music intertwined with spontaneous improvisation and a cappella interludes.
The five core members, Ayumi Ueda of Japan, Annette Phillip of India, Ali Rapetti of the USA, Giorgia Renosto of Italy, and Katerina Polemi of Greece and Brazil have a seminal message: “We are all from different countries, yet we share a common sky without borders or boundaries. We believe that unity in action can inspire further change. We create and share music to bring joy to people’s hearts.”
In light of recent tumultuous world events and triumphant strides to freedom, Women of the World is living proof that different cultures can coexist in harmony and that the world is more powerful when united.
The Women of the World perform their first Carnegie Hall show at the Weill Recital Hall, 881 Seventh Avenue, New York, NY 10019-3210 on March 15th, 2011 at 8pm. The event is open to the public and tickets can be purchased online at www.carnegiehall.org.
