Jay Danley’s Subtle and Refined Cuban Dance Music

Jay Danley – Digno, Sofisticado y Elegante (2024)

Multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger, and producer Jay Danley has dropped his latest project, Digno, Sofisticado y Elegante, a delightful and savory seven-track album of pure son cubano. Known for his mastery of the Cuban tres guitar, Danley goes back to his roots with this collection of all-original, instrumental music that highlights both his technical precision on the tres and his undeniable talent for composition.

Danley was a pivotal figure in Toronto’s Latin music scene during the mid-1990s. He co-founded the nine-piece Cuban son group Klave y Kongo, which had a long-running residency at a popular downtown club. He quickly earned a reputation as a top-tier sideman, playing alongside Latin music heavyweights. His collaborations include recording two albums with Cuban piano legend Hilario Durán and performing with saxophonist Jane Bunnett. Danley’s resume doesn’t stop there; he’s shared the stage with giants like Eliades Ochoa, Compay Segundo, Oscar D’León, and members of Cubanísimo.

One of the most amazing qualities of Son Cubano is the fact that although it is a form of dance music it contains a subtlety and refinement that is woven into the fabric of the music” says Danley. “That’s why this album is called “Digno, Sofisticado y Elegante”, or dignified, sophisticated and elegant.”

The album was written, recorded and produced by Danley in Kaslo, British Columbia.
