Spilar, Belgian Folk Rooted in Ancient stories and poetry

Spilar – Vandaag En Alle Dagen (Trad Record, 2024)

In their latest album, Vandaag En Alle Dagen, Belgian ensemble Spilar explores contemporary themes, drawing inspiration from the words of Antwerp poet Wannes Van de Velde. The album reflects on pressing issues such as climate change and conflict, while also instilling a sense of hope and trust for the future.

Based in coastal Ostend, the band incorporates elements of the sea into their music, mirroring the influence of the North Sea’s salt winds. Furthermore, Vandaag En Alle Dagen masterfully intertwines old stories and poetry.

Spilar emerged as a notable act in the Belgian folk scene. They gained acclaim with their debut album Stormweere (2020). The quintet’s contemporary folk sound, enriched by powerful drums, keyboards, and folk-rock guitar, provides a compelling backdrop to the vocals of Eva and Maarten Decombel. Their multiflavored repertoire keeps the listener invested. It includes traditional songs from their homeland, as well as carefully selected pieces from artists like Béla Fléck, Jacques Brel, and Richard Thompson.

Musicians: Louis Favre on drums; Eva Decombel on vocals; Maarten Decombel on vocals, mandola, guitar; Jeroen Geerinck on guitar, keys, synths; and Ward Dhoore on mandolin, synthesizers.
