Pickin’ Up the Pieces: Mike Mitchell Covers Dawes for Wildfire Relief

Bluegrass artist Mike Mitchell has released a cover of Dawes’ “Time Spent in Los Angeles,” with all proceeds benefiting MusiCares and its support efforts for wildfire victims in California.

The project began as a casual challenge during the 2018 Folk Alliance, where Mitchell was encouraged by The Lords of Lichtenstein to cover a Dawes track. Teaming up remotely with fellow musician Jody, he recorded the song “mostly just for fun.” However, after witnessing Dawes perform the same tune at a recent benefit for fire victims, Mitchell decided to formally release his version as a fundraiser.

Rooted in Appalachian bluegrass tradition, Mitchell brings a new perspective to the folk-rock original, combining acoustic instrumentation with heartfelt delivery. The release reflects the generosity he’s seen in his own community and aims to inspire similar support for those affected by the fires.
