Between Tradition and the Avant-Garde: Diego Guerrero’s ‘New Territories’ of Flamenco

The SGAE Foundation continues its Nuevos Territorios (New Territories) series, a program in which established artists open the doors of Madrid’s Sala Berlanga to emerging talents who represent the next wave in flamenco. This time, the spotlight falls on flamenco singer, producer, and arranger Diego Guerrero, who brings together a lineup that balances the deep roots of traditional flamenco, from Reus de la Frontera and El Cortecitas, to the experimental, hybrid genre styles of Desiré Paredes and Juan Pérez ‘Aure. Altogether, it promises to be a celebration of the vibrant state of contemporary flamenco, taking place April 25 and 26.

On Friday, April 25 at 7:30 PM, Guerrero himself will inaugurate the series with a conversation alongside journalist Santi Alcanda, host of Como lo oyes on Radio 3. Together, they’ll discuss the curatorial choices behind the artist lineup and explore those “new territories” into which flamenco is currently expanding.

Following the talk, the group Reus de la Frontera, led by singers Pancho Moreno and Juanjo de Nayeli, along with Juan el Pillo (vocals and guitar), Rubén Camacho (vocals, guitar, and cajón), Abraham Jiménez (vocals and guitar), and Tin Cortés (vocals and guitar), will take the stage to deliver a rousing Juerga Flamenca, the title of their debut project, filled with magic, spontaneity, and raw emotion.

Up next is Desiré Paredes, the Madrid-born singer who adds an avant-garde dimension to the evening. Her set weaves flamenco with global folk traditions and electronic elements. Currently, she’s in the midst of producing her next EP, with Guerrero himself as producer.

On Saturday, April 26 at 8:00 PM, the evening opens with Juan Pérez ‘Aure’, winner of the 2022 SGAE Paco de Lucía Prize. The pianist from Huelva, known for his solid western classical training and creative flair, continues to explore bold musical creations while staying grounded in flamenco’s most traditional roots.

The series concludes with a powerful performance by El Cortecitas, a multi-instrumentalist and singer, and the son of the legendary El Cortezas. His show will close out the series with a moving homage to cante jondo, paying tribute to his family’s legacy and the great masters who shaped his path.
