Andy Leftwich Goes Bananas on “Highland Rim”

Andy Leftwich returns with Highland Rim,” a high-energy instrumental that highlights his virtuosity alongside some of bluegrass’s finest musicians. Following his soulful interpretation of Talk About Suffering in response to last year’s Hurricane Helene, the acclaimed fiddler and mandolinist now delivers a fast-paced track inspired by the thrill of speed.

Opening with rapid arpeggios from guitarist Cody Kilby (Travelin’ McCourys), the piece builds momentum as Matt Menefee’s banjo, along with Leftwich’s mandolin and fiddle, drive the intricate melody forward. Anchored by bassist Byron House (Nickel Creek, Robert Plant), the ensemble navigates a cascade of blistering solos that maintain clarity and precision despite their speed.

Named after a raceway near his childhood home, Highland Rim embodies Leftwich’s love for high-intensity instrumentals. “I wanted a song where we could go absolutely bananas,” he explains, and the track delivers exactly that, an exhilarating bluegrass sprint fueled by technical mastery.
