On Wednesday, February 26, 2025, pianist Lucian Ban and violist Mat Maneri bring their boundary-pushing interpretations of Transylvanian folk music to National Sawdust, New York City. Drawing from their acclaimed albums, Transylvanian Folk Songs (Sunnyside Records), named an NPR Album of the Year in 2020, and their recent ECM release Transylvanian Dance, the duo reimagines Béla Bartók’s field recordings of traditional songs.
Using National Sawdust’s cutting-edge Meyer Sound Spatial Sound system, Ban and Maneri will weave together live performance with archival audio from Bartók’s original Edison wax cylinder recordings. Rare handwritten manuscripts and photographs from the composer’s fieldwork will further enrich the experience, offering a bridge between past and present.
Presented by the World Music Institute in collaboration with National Sawdust, the concert is part of the Origins Series, which explores world music traditions through contemporary lenses.
