The New York Irish Center continues its world music series, Crossroads Concerts, with a fusion of Irish and Indian folk traditions on Thursday, February 27, 2025, at 7:00 p.m. This seven-part concert series, a highlight of the Center’s 20th anniversary season, runs through June 2025 and explores the intersections of Irish music with global traditions. The February event is co-presented with India Home in Queens.
Curated by ethnomusicologist Colin Harte, Crossroads Concerts spotlights virtuoso musicians from diverse backgrounds. Previous performances have juxtaposed Irish folk music with Puerto Rican plena and celebrated holiday traditions from Irish Mummers and Puerto Rican parranda.
The February 27 concert will feature a dazzling mix of Irish traditional music and Indian classical compositions, performed by an acclaimed lineup:
Sameer Gupta (tabla) – A percussionist bridging Indian classical music and jazz, co-founder of Brooklyn Raga Massive and The Supplicants, and drummer for the Marc Cary Focus Trio.
Jay Gandhi (bansuri) – A disciple of legendary bansuri maestro Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia.
Jerry O’Sullivan (uilleann pipes) – A leading uilleann piper, also skilled in tin whistle, Highland bagpipes, and Scottish small pipes, with credits including The Boston Pops, Dolly Parton, and Paul Winter’s Grammy-winning “Celtic Solstice”.
Colin Harte (piano, bodhrán, vocals) – A pianist, percussionist, and educator at Bard College – Bronx, active in the New York jazz, Latin, and Irish music communities.
The Crossroads Concerts series launched in October 2024 and continues to showcase the rich musical dialogs between cultures rooted in New York’s diverse neighborhoods.
