Rhythms Across Oceans: Sauljaljui’s “Dipin Kari Tang” Bridges Taiwan, Mauritius, and Colombia

Paiwan indigenous artist Sauljaljui has unveiled the remix of her single “Dipin Kari Tang” (Wind Music), offering a vibrant preview of her upcoming album, Vaivaik, slated for release in mid-December. This track is the product of a cross-cultural collaboration with Indus, a Colombian producer celebrated for merging traditional sounds with electronic beats.

“Dipin Kari Tang,” rooted in Mauritius’s Creole rhythms, translates to “bread, curry, hedgehog.” Sauljaljui discovered this rhythm during her travels in Mauritius, learning it from local percussionists. She incorporated the rhythm and its essence into her music, weaving it into a lyrical tribute to cultural exchange: “I store it at the bottom of my heart. Move your hips and come!”

The original track, enriched by the soulful harmonies of the Paiwan Taiwu Ballads Troupe, takes listeners on a journey from the Indian Ocean to Taiwan.

In the remix, Indus infuses Currulao, a traditional Colombian genre characterized by Afro-Pacific percussion, creating a dialogue of rhythms across continents. The remix features Cununo, Bombo, and Wasa drums recorded by Jayr Torres, the son of legendary Colombian musician Gualajo, bridging yet another cultural divide.

The single’s artwork, designed by QUAND, celebrates the connection between people, land, and nature. With vibrant abstractions, it honors the indigenous cultures of Taiwan and the unique wildlife of Mauritius, such as the iconic Dodo bird, further amplifying the song’s theme of unity across distant realms.

Following her successful European tour, Sauljaljui’s forthcoming album promises to expand her signature fusion of indigenous traditions with global influences. “Dipin Kari Tang” exemplifies her mission to connect diverse musical heritages, creating a shared rhythm that resonates worldwide.
