Biomigrant’s Aguaceros y Sequías: An Immersive Fusion of Electronica and Folk Rhythms

Biomigrant – Aguaceros y Sequías (Biomigrant, 2024)

Biomigrant, the project of producer and multi-instrumentalist Michael Alfred Wagner, returns with Aguaceros y Sequías (Downpours and Droughts), an album that audaciously brings together electronic music and traditional Mexican and Colombian folk influences. Known for mixing roots music with electronica, Biomigrant crafts a fascinating, introspective set using silver flute, trumpet, Colombian gaita, and voice, supported by electronic beats and textured field recordings. Rhythmic influences range from electronic house music and savory Colombian cumbia to Afro-Colombian traditions, with bits of Afrobeats and guaracha.

Wagner composed and recorded this lovely album in the mountain ridges near Bogotá, Colombia, and the cloud forests of Veracruz, Mexico. Notably, the album’s title nods to the environmental extremes that shaped its creation: landslides, floods, and forest fires. As a consequence, it echoes both global crises and personal reflections.

Biomigrant is Wagner’s channel for exploring sound’s power to convey emotion and perspective. He’s an American who bicycled through Central America in 2014 before settling in Colombia. Indeed, Wagner embraces music and dance as transformative media, finding beauty even in life’s most challenging moments.
