Robert Browning Associates has revealed its 2024-25 season, presenting a diverse lineup of world music performances in New York City. Highlights include:
- Fareed Ayaz & Abu Muhammad Qawwals (Nov 2): A renowned ensemble from Pakistan, performing improvisational Sufi qawwali music.
- Ali Akbar Moradi & Pejman Hadadi (Nov 23): Kurdish sacred music featuring the tanbur (lute) and percussion in a rare New York appearance.
- Antonio “El Turry” (Mar 7): A rising star in flamenco, making his New York debut.
- Nibal Malshi (Mar 15): Offering soulful Arabic songs in an evocative program.
- Guillermina Quiroga (Mar 28): Passionate Argentine tango featuring the famed dancer.
- Ustad Shahid Parvez & Shakir Khan (Apr 4): Celebrated sitar virtuoso and his son in an electrifying performance.
- Hamza Akram Qawwal & Brothers (Apr 11): An award-winning ensemble representing 26 generations of ecstatic qawwali music.
- Oghlan Bakhshi & Zyyda Jumayeva (Apr 25): Turkmen music with expert dutar (lute) players, rarely heard in the U.S.
- Simon Shaheen (Apr 26): World-renowned ‘ud (lute) player and composer, known for his contributions to Arabic music.
Robert Browning has been a prominent figure in the world music scene since 1976. His career includes work at the Alternative Museum, 26 years with the World Music Institute (which he co-founded), and a decade directing Robert Browning Associates. He has presented over 2,400 concerts, featuring internationally recognized artists from more than 100 regions.
